those days of yore were filled with cheese and ice cream. boys sent embarrassing lyrics to our computer screens and we spent our nights together. promises of lunchtime birthday celebrations were pushed back so we could sleep longer. we kept track of the days by sunday sermons and movie madness. it was all about baseball games, open houses, and smoking cigars at 3am. at pool parties we pretended that september wouldn't separate us, but the uncomfortable silences always told us we were wrong. the late-night denny's crowd was always good for a laugh and i remember the outlines of three pairs of legs as she turned emo on me. when she was on my left and he was on my right the crowds of screaming children never phased us. for three months we stopped caring and clinged to each other when they all walked away. we found ourselves in the most random groups and that evening he found a guitar and softly strummed bob marley as we watched the news. we spent our money on bad pop punk albums and they laughed, but i never told them about last year.

eighteen nights from now we'll have new rides and stories to tell.
